HIV
" Emergency Exposure Kit"
A recent study reported by the Public Health Service and other
interagency working groups provided the basis for PD-Rx's kit. The
study found that health care workers treated with AZT (zidovudine)
after accidental HIV exposure were approximately 79 percent less
likely to become infected than untreated workers, provided treatment
was started within 1 to 2 hours. This kit has been designed to begin
treatment for three days. Allowing enough time to have the donor's
blood tested and the results returned from the lab.
This kit is intended to be used (when appropriate) after an occupational
percutaneous exposure to HIV infected (or potentially infected)
blood.
Doctors, nurses and other health care workers who are accidentally
exposed to HW-tainted blood should receive Anti-HIV medication therapy.
Treatment should be initiated promptly, preferably within 1-2 hours
post-exposure. This short treatment window does not leave time for
mistakes, locating Anti-HIV medications or time to research the
literature regarding the various treatment protocols.
The HIV Emergency Exposure Kit that PD-Rx has created:
1. An easy to follow, step by step flow chart
to assess risk and determine the course of action.
2. A 3 days supply of the three critical Anti-HIV medications
recommended for post exposure prophylaxis.
3. Patient drug advisory information, which details the use of
the medications, side effects, precautions, and drug interactions.
4. Additional information includes a printed copy of the PHS Post
Exposure Prophylaxis recommendations and a consent form for treatment.
5. HIV post exposure prophylaxis registry form. This form provides
a conduit for important information to be exchanged between the
PHS and the exposed patient.
PD-Rx believes this kit is essential for every health
care delivery setting where exposure to blood is a potential risk.
1. It provides a high quality, low cost solution
to compliance with the PHS provisional recommendations and favorable
evaluation by OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration).
2. It is immediately available for dispensing in case of exposure.
3. Most of all it gives you the confidence that you have done
everything possible to save your employees lives in case of accidental
exposure.
4. This HIV Kit will be tracked by our computerized system to
keep you abreast of the expiration date, PD-Rx will call and notify
you when the kit is about to expire and will confirm with your
staff that a replacement is necessary.
If you have used the HIV Kit following an accidental needle stick
or other forms of exposure, you will need to notify PD-Rx of the
usage and we will forward you a new kit for replacement.
